This is how Project 600R looked at the end of the night, around 11pm. Did you know that 4x100 Scion steelies will bolt right on to a 4x4” bolt pattern? I do now. It’d need adapters to actually use these - the left side has the differential lock in the hub so that tire only uses about 5 threads per lug nut. The right side went on just fine, though.

Below is how it looked at around 5pm.

With the motor out, I took some frame measurements, and theoretically the XL600R engine will fit in the engine hole without any frame modification beyond welding mounts.

Here’s where I need help, though. The XL600R runs a variation of a dry sump system where it uses the upper frame tube as an oil reservoir. I can’t do this on this machine, so I need an external oil tank. I can’t cut the upper frame tube off and use that because it’s buckled and cracked from the crash. Suggestions?

Those tires look like they’ll have a hard enough time on wet grass, let alone out on a trail.

100mm is almost immeasurably close to 3 15/16”. 4 on 4 will absolutely bolt up to 4 on 100 as long as you give approximately zero fuck about an extra thirty-second in radius. Which, on a kawasaki trike, YOLO.

They’re only for moving it around the shop. The rears won’t hold air. I’ve got tubes to fix that.

What’s the diameter of the inlet between the reservoir and the engine? Or is it just a hose?

Suggestions?

Yes. Get a sports bottle bracket, mount that to the frame, and rig a sports bottle as your oil reservoir. As long as the lines are long enough, you can pop it out of the bracket and unscrew it from the top - instant oil change. Also, you can joke about drinking oil ALL THE TIME.

Rubber hose.

Gravity fed, I assume? If so your mounting optios are pretty flexible as long as it’s above the engine. I’m thinking go to a junkyard and nab the vacuum reservoir out of an old car.

Use an aluminum beer bottle.

It does have an oil pump to circulate the system.

The only problem with that plan is that the bottles are quite thin and a bitch and a half to weld fittings to, even if you’re skilled with Tig.

This is a true statement - we used them on our FSAE car, and went through about a dozen of them to get 2 right.

would an old steel oil can be too big?

So did we, we gave up and stuck the hoses in the top with an insert glued in.

That’s what I was proposing. Hoses in the top of the bottle, one short, one long, so the bottle could screw off of the top for emptying, etc.

That would work if it is not a pressurized system and this is just a catch can, but i’m not sure that’s the case.

I wonder how many psi a good aluminum sports bottle is good for... One would think typical pressure ranges would be easy to build the cap interface for (<80psi), given nipples through holes and epoxy. One would think the bottle itself and the seal would be fine, so you’d be golden.

I don’t know, but it could be fun to find out! unfortunately I would bet the seal on the treads would be the failure point assuming you sealed the fitting well enough.

Now that I think about it you could drill holes in the cap, insert hard line straws, idealy with barbs fitted or welded on, then pot the straws into the cap with the nastiest epoxy you can find. Might work ok.

If, on the other hand, the bottle is under suction, the seal only has to deal with -14.7psi, tops. The limit moves from the seal to the bottle in that case, it being harder to explode a bottle than collapse one. Probably not the case here, though - odds are on positive pressure. I’d be really interested to see what the cap on his existing motorcycle frame seals like - since it has a fill cap, the pressures probably aren’t even at typical auto pressure levels. I’d be surprised if it were much over 25.

That makes it easier. You could make one out of a length of pvc with caps on each end and some taps for the hoses.

Might be. I’m not sure. I suppose I should get it in the chassis and see what spare room I have first.

I think it’d be neat. If you need to strip the can in order to weld the line fittings... a ‘custom’ painted oil can wouldn’t be the worst thing haha.
